This workshop will explore the development and success of Temecula Valley Unified School District’s (TVUSD) Parent Specialist model, a program designed to enhance collaboration between families and schools using TOSAs, particularly in the area of special education. Participants will gain insight into the historical context that led to the program’s implementation, including the district's proactive response to challenges with IEP processes and advocacy group influence. We will outline the services Parent Specialists provide, such as neutral support for parents during IEP meetings, review of IEP alignment, and follow-up with teachers or schools to address concerns.
Attendees will also learn about the proven impact of the Parent Specialist program, supported by data showing a reduction in ADR cases, due process complaints, and increased positive parent feedback. The session will detail how parents access the program, funding strategies, and the additional ways Parent Specialists contribute to classroom teacher support through coaching, compliance, and training. By the end of this workshop, participants will have a clear understanding of how the Parent Specialist model fosters effective communication, resolves conflicts, and ensures the educational success of students.
